Starting perler beads and not sure what to buy? Here's the whole shopping list — what to get, how to choose, how much you need, and how to start for around $20 without wasting money ✨
ESSENTIALS
The 4 things you need
Perler beads sound involved, but the core is just four things:
Need it
① Beads
fuse / melty beads · the pixels
The plastic beads themselves. Beginners: 5mm (standard) — larger, easier to place. Start with a basic multi-color set (24–48 colors) rather than buying every color.
Need it
② Pegboard
the base you place beads on
A board with pegs to hold the beads. A square board is the most versatile; shaped boards (hearts, animals) are nice-to-have later.
Need it
③ Ironing paper
parchment / bead paper
Goes over the beads so they don't stick to the iron. A pack is cheap and lasts. Don't use plain paper — it sticks.
Need it
④ Iron
to fuse · you likely own one
Fuses the beads at medium heat. Your household iron is fine — no need to buy one.
Optional
⑤ Tweezers
easier placing
Handy for placing tiny beads precisely. Optional — fingers work too.
Free
⑥ A pattern
the blueprint you follow
Shows which color goes where and how many. No need to buy — generate one free with the pattern maker.
HOW TO CHOOSE
Buying tips, no mistakes
5mm vs 2.6mm? Beginners always 5mm — larger, higher success rate. 2.6mm minis are tiny and fiddly; try them once you're comfortable.
Don't over-buy colors. A 24–48 color starter set is plenty. Buy specific colors by name (see the Perler color chart), not by matching a screen.
Start with a square board. Most versatile; shaped boards are extras, not essentials.
How many beads? Depends on size — don't guess. The pattern maker tells you how many of each color to buy.
SAVE
Start cheap
About $15–25 to start: a basic color set + one square board + a pack of ironing paper. Use a household iron. Don't buy a big kit first — start small, add colors and boards once you're hooked.
Patterns are free — generate them with the tool, which also gives you the bead count.
Don't buy an iron — your household one works fine.
Restock as you go — make a couple of small pieces first, learn your go-to colors, then buy more of those.
